About us

A school built by the community, for the community

We are a not-for-profit association run by Congolese families in Albury Wodonga, helping the next generation hold on to their languages and culture while building a strong future in Australia.

Our story

How it all began

As more Congolese families made Albury Wodonga home, parents noticed their children were quickly losing the languages spoken at home. Elders worried that songs, stories and traditions would not be passed on.

In 2022 community members came together and formed the Wodonga Congolese Cultural School Inc., a registered not-for-profit association. In March 2024 the school was launched in front of families, friends and local leaders, and our first community classes opened in April 2024.

Today the school runs classes in English, Swahili, French, Congolese culture and computer skills, and hosts events that bring the whole region together.

What we stand for

Four things that guide everything we do

Lugha

Language

Children who speak the languages of home stay connected to parents, grandparents and family overseas.

Utamaduni

Culture

Music, dance, food and stories carry our history. We make sure they are celebrated, not forgotten.

Jamii

Belonging

Our classes are a place where newcomers make friends, find support and feel at home.

Fursa

Opportunity

Working with the wider community

We are proud to be part of the multicultural life of the Border. Our events have welcomed local mayors, members of parliament, health services and community councils, and have been supported by organisations including the Albury-Wodonga Ethnic Communities Council, STARTTS, AlburyCity, Gateway Health and the Victorian Government.

If your organisation would like to partner with us, sponsor a class or help at an event, we would love to hear from you.
